Wedding Photography Style

The wife and I had a discussion not that long ago about Wedding Photography Style and it really got me thinking.

Whilst editing a photo from a recent wedding she said to me that she didn’t like an image and that it wouldn’t be what the bride and groom would be looking for.

I instantly got defensive, how dare she I thought. This was a new technique and wedding photography style that I was attempting to create and she crushes me.

Anyway, I took a break from editing and took the dogs on their walk to allow me to re-compose myself mainly from the confidence shattering statement my had just came out with.

But, as I usually do I started to think about what she had meant and I could see her point.

I shoot in a Contemporary Wedding Photography Style, where I like to shoot in a natural, Unobtrusive and Documentative manner, but there are times during the day that I will lightly pose the couple and groups to get the best image.

On this occasion I was trying a more of a fine art wedding photography style with the couple, technically the shot went great and even editing the image I really liked it, however.

Would a bride and groom like this type of image in their album?

As I thought about what my wife said I realised that by applying that style of photography to my images I asked myself, was I was essentially changing my contemporary wedding photography style?

This is something that I do not want to do, I want to remain within this style of wedding photography but I also want to add these types of images to my couples albums.

Defining Wedding Photography Style

Wedding photography styles are as varied as the ceremonies they capture, each with distinct traits that set them apart.

Traditional wedding photography often evokes the word “classic,” and for good reason.

It typically involves posed shots that are clean and straightforward, focusing on group photos and key wedding elements like the cake.

This style is directed and orchestrated by the photographer, who works off shot lists to create a timeless collection of images.

In contrast, photojournalistic wedding photography is akin to storytelling, capturing candid moments as they unfold.

This style prioritizes a non-intrusive approach, often described as candid or documentary.

It eschews posed shots for a more relaxed and authentic representation of the day, aiming to catch the unique nuances and emotions of the wedding.

Lastly, fine art wedding photography is characterized by an artistic flair, where the photographer’s personal interpretation and creativity take center stage.

This style often results in visually stunning images that are both romantic and ethereal, with a focus on composition, lighting, and an overall aesthetic quality that feels like a piece of art.

Understanding these differences can help couples communicate their vision and find a photographer whose approach aligns with their desired wedding album.

Understanding the Technical Aspects of the Wedding Photography Style

Wedding photography is not just about the “I dos,” the kisses, or the first dance.

It’s about weaving the essence of the day into a visual narrative, and to do so, technical aspects such as lighting, composition, and posing are crucial.

Each wedding photography style leverages these elements in different ways to tell a couple’s unique story.

  • Lighting: In traditional wedding photography, lighting tends to be more controlled, aiming for a polished look, while photojournalistic styles might utilize available light to capture raw, authentic moments. Fine art wedding photography often uses lighting to create mood and atmosphere, setting a more cinematic stage for the subjects.
  • Composition: This is the visual recipe that dictates how elements are arranged in the frame. Traditional compositions favor symmetry and balance, whereas the more contemporary fine art approach may play with unconventional framing to evoke emotion or highlight details.
  • Posing: Traditional styles might direct subjects for a more posed, classic feel. However, a photojournalistic approach captures spontaneous interactions with minimal intervention, and fine art may incorporate elements of both, crafting candid moments within a more controlled aesthetic environment.

Mastering these technicalities is akin to an artist choosing the right brush strokes for a painting.

Whether it’s the soft glow of natural light or the deliberate arrangement of the bridal party, these techniques help wedding photographers create timeless wedding photos that resonate with the couple’s vision of their special day.

Pros and Cons of Different Wedding Photography Styles

Wedding photography styles are a blend of art and memory preservation, each with its own flavour.

Traditional wedding photography is akin to a family heirloom, classic and posed, ensuring each smile is curated for posterity.

However, its formality may come at the cost of spontaneity, potentially making the images appear rigid.

In contrast, photojournalistic wedding photography thrives on the unpredictability of the moment, telling the nuptial story through candid snapshots.

Its strength lies in capturing raw, emotional narratives, but it may overlook the desire for more structured, traditional family portraits.

Lastly, fine art wedding photography is the canvas where photographers paint with light, often creating ethereal and stylized images.

While these images are visually arresting and unique, they may require more time and investment, and the results are heavily dependent on the artistic vision of the photographer, which may not align with every couple’s taste.

Choosing the right style is a personal journey, reflective of the couple’s vision for their day.

Whether yearning for the timeless appeal of traditional, the authenticity of photojournalism, or the artistic flair of fine art, couples should consider which approach resonates with their personal narrative.

  • Traditional: Timeless, posed, but may seem formal
  • Photojournalistic: Candid, authentic, but may miss traditional shots
  • Fine Art: Artistic, unique, but requires more planning and investment

Delving into the intricacies of each style can help in making an informed decision.

Experienced wedding photographers often have portfolios that showcase the nuances of their preferred style, offering a glimpse into what can be expected on the big day.

Couples should explore these visual narratives to find the style that echoes their vision.

Tips for Choosing a Wedding Photographer

When embarking on the quest to find the perfect wedding photographer, several key factors come into play.

It begins with establishing a budget, which will inform your choices and the extent of services you can afford.

Engage in some research to understand local pricing and consider the importance of various elements like the preparation shots or reception coverage in your package.

Equally crucial is identifying a photography style that resonates with you and your partner, ensuring it will stand the test of time beyond current trends.

This might involve sifting through a plethora of images to pinpoint what strikes a chord with your aesthetic preferences, be it the editing style, composition, or the photographer’s knack for capturing genuine emotion.

To ensure you’re on the same page, it’s beneficial to share a collection of favoured images with your photographer.

Furthermore, don’t just skim through their portfolio highlights; request to see full wedding galleries to gauge their consistency and range.

Lastly, consider the lighting conditions of your venue, as this can significantly impact the final imagery.

A skilled photographer should adeptly work through sunny or low-lit environments to produce stunning photos that echo the essence of your special day.

Exploring Different Wedding Photography Styles in Action

Wedding photography is an art that immortalizes one of the most cherished days in a couple’s life.

Each style brings a unique flavor to the wedding album. Traditional wedding photography offers a structured approach, capturing posed moments with grace and precision.

It’s a legacy in frames, providing a timeless narrative of the big day, as seen through classic portraits that stand the test of time.

In contrast, documentary wedding photography focuses on candidness, seizing spontaneous emotions and interactions.

With the documentary wedding photography style they are able to blend into the background to chronicle the day, capturing the essence of the wedding through a series of natural, unposed images that tell a comprehensive story.

For those seeking an artistic edge, fine art photography employs an artistic lens to narrate the wedding story.

This wedding photography style, characterized by its light and airy feel, often thrives in the glow of natural light, perfect for outdoor settings.

Meanwhile, dark and moody photography carves out a niche for couples desiring a bold, dramatic look, emphasizing deep shadows and intense emotions.

The resurgence of analog film photography appeals to the nostalgic, offering a tangible and organic quality that digital images can’t replicate.

Film captures authentic aesthetics and the thrill of anticipation, with each frame taken with purpose and care.

Understanding these styles in action helps couples and photographers alike to align vision and execution, ensuring the wedding photos reflect the couple’s personality and the day’s magic.

Frequently Asked Questions about Wedding Photography Styles

When it comes to capturing your special day, wedding photography is as varied as the couples saying “I do.”

One common query is how to choose a photographer.

The key is to understand the different styles, such as fine art (think posed) and documentary (think candid), and to review complete weddings on the photographer’s blog rather than just their portfolio.

It’s also important to meet the photographer to ensure there’s a good rapport and to clarify what’s included in their packages.

  • Know your style: fine art vs. documentary
  • Review complete wedding blogs, not just portfolios
  • Meet photographers in person
  • Understand package details

Another question is about the volume of work a photographer handles annually.

This varies widely, but it’s essential to know that a seasoned photographer may have hundreds of weddings under their belt, which can be a testament to their experience.

When considering what’s included in wedding photography collections, look for offerings like high-resolution images, custom flash drives, engagement sessions, and more.
